Safe

There's a reason why novelists teach other writers to write with their senses. To truly experience a story, the reader needs to know the environment by sound, sight, touch, taste, and smell. Just one of those senses can transport them into your scene.

I experienced that for maybe 5 seconds yesterday. The simple sound of a Dually truck roaring up the hill we live on took me into the past. The stress weighing on the engine made that rumbling sound even more prounounced than normal.

Someone in my past drove a Dually and carried me and my loved ones all over the place. Whenever I was in that truck with that person at the wheel, I felt safe. I never had to wonder if I was loved, cared about, or would be provided for.

That person has since passed on and so has that feeling. No one on this planet has ever provided that feeling for me again. I came very close recently but then the safety net was snatched away from me. It's okay. The sound of that Dually reminded me of what I'm looking for and of what is necessary for my nervous personality to be at ease. And I will wait for it.
