Binge Review: Marry My Husband
To be a good writer, you have to be a good reviewer. You have to do your homework. Read books, watch movies, binge watch...whatever it takes to get better. I know I've mentioned some of this before because it is part of who I am as a writer now.
Especially if I like the writer or their work. Take Jane Austen for example. Has Pride and Prejudice been overdone? Uh, probably. Yet I'll never forget the first time I read the book and the affect it had on me. Then Sense and Sensibility. Power stories like hers made me start to dig in and dissect what her secret weapon was that made her stories live on.
Now I truly pay attention to the writing. If something makes me want to binge watch, the writer has obviously done their job and hooked me. And now I want to be as good as they are. Or better. In that vein, I recently binge watched the Korean T.V. series, Marry My Husband on Prime. Whew. What a ride!
That writer took me down in Episode 1. Like Dante's Inferno, just when I thought the protagonist couldn't go down any lower, a subterranean floor appeared in the descent to hell. I was almost gagging on my own emotion! And ticked that the writer felt the need to take the plot that far.
The agony kept me in the game though. I needed that bright spot. That ascent back to ground level where the sunshine would once again greet my face...so I hung tough. The writer pulled me along like a child in a wagon. I was helpless as the plot took over my evenings. I can't do spoiler alerts.
But I will tell you that I appreciate a good story that hijacks me before I know I'm a prisoner. That's what this story does. The plot twists and vengeful paybacks are all worth the watch.
