Love Thyself
I love the Zoom writing group I participate in every month. Last night was no exception. As we went from person to person discussing what trips us up in writing, there was a lot of self-judgment. Everyone trying to overcome their personality or natural tendencies to become more dedicated to the craft of writing.
As I listened to the young writers, it struck me that I used to be that person. Bashing myself over the head with judgmental thoughts because I wasn't doing everything the "right way". The berating behavior came from a place of tradition. People think you have to dedicate a certain time of day, every day, to important tasks. But, why? As long as you don't deny your gifting. It should be done on your terms.
When I heard them beat up on themselves the right side of my brain screamed, "No! You're sucking all the fun out of it!" I finally jumped in and rescued them by explaining that writing should be fun. It should be a pleasurable experience. And for the love of Pete, quit trying to force a square peg into a round hole :-0
Accept your personality and its quirks (that's probably what everyone loves about you!) Then just roll with it. If you're a night owl, write at night. If you're an early birdie, hit it in the morning. But, whatever you do....don't judge thyself. LOVE THYSELF!!!! It's true in recovering from rejection - or love unrequited - as well. Don't be ashamed of your perceived personality deficiencies. Embrace! I tell you! Love thyself...as is. My mom used to say to accept yourself "warts and all".
That's my challenge to you and me this weekend. Write down what you don't like about yourself and what you do. Hug and kiss that silly piece of paper. Stuff it in your bra or wallet. Carry it close to your heart. That's you! And you're unique. That is exactly what will draw the right people to you. So, don't deny yourself. LOVE THYSELF!
