Most Googled: Cyndi Lauper
Honestly, it surprises me that her name is still trending. I went to a Cyndi Lauper concert when I was in middle school. What has kept her relevant? Sure, she had a long lasting hit with her women anthem Girls Just Want to Have Fun (1983). Along with Time After Time (1983) and True Colors (1986). But why is she trending in Google like she's still a pop star? Apparently, she announced a farewell tour of 23-cities that kicks off on October 18th. That'll do it!
As I dug in to find out who she was, why was she relevant still, and her life story, I was mesmerized. Wow. According to Nikiswift.com, what a life Cyndi endured! When she was young, other kids threw rocks at her because she dressed differently. She once lived by hitchhiking. To survive, she ate a squirrel a boyfriend killed. This mega pop star went from the depths of despair contemplating suicide all the way to the top of the charts and superstardom!
No wonder I was so drawn to her as an awkward tween brimming with insecurity and self-loathing from my own life experiences. I identified with her on some level without knowing it. Her wild hair, quirky outfits, and different voice were the very things that made me a fan. Admittedly, her growing up was tragic compared to mine which makes me happy that her talent led her to a better life.
Maybe I should buy a ticket to her farewell tour? We shall see. Well, hats off Cyndi for cutting your own path against the grain of what life was trying to force feed you. Well done, Cyndi. Well done.
