Truth Bombs
My son is a gifted songwriter. Since the first time he picked up a guitar he was determined to squeeze something out of it. Song after song began trickling out and as a mom and a writer, I couldn't be prouder.
But there are those moments when I wince. It's not because of any failure on his part, it's because of failure on my part. Just yesterday he wrote a song and my gut cringed as he said a word I didn't like in it. He loves country music so most of his songs are about broken hearts, drinking, and smoking. Naturally, they are sometimes presented with colorful words.
Usually, I just listen and offer any insight that I can. It just hit me wrong yesterday and I called him out on it. He immediately checked me on my judgmental assessment. As painful as it is for me to admit, he's telling his own truth. At least he's not fake. And it's just what pours out of his soul when he's crooning. I don't have to agree with it, but I do have to respect it.
Why? Because I support his gifting and the fact that he's honoring it. Given time, I think he'll figure out who he wants to be. I mean, aren't we all growing and changing on a regular basis? Well, we should be anyway. For now, my decided stance is to cover and support him. Let him cut his own path to his future!
