Writing Cards

While writing for American Greetings, I learned a thing or two about writing greeting cards. For one, they prepare them (like a lot of publishing) way ahead for a future season. For example, you may write a Valentine today for the 2025 Valentine season.

The way it worked for us freelancers was they sent us writing "assignments" every week. We were offered a theme and had to create verse centered around it. I loved this challenge and actually didn't think too hard about it. That is RARE for me...queen of the overthinkers! Somehow, I just let it flow...whatever I felt.

They offered us guidelines which I thoroughly scoured, but again, I just learned to do my thing. One tip they impressed on us was to have someone in mind when you wrote the verse. Someone from your circle that you cared about. This helps you write better.

As time went by and I created more and more verse, I learned that they don't always buy the whole verse you send in. In fact, two that they purchased from me were 4 lines and they simply bought 1 line, for the same flat rate they paid for a whole verse. I had to sign a contract to give them all rights to those lines, but I figured there was always more where those came from!

These are the type of tips I will share on the YouTube Channel. Hope to see you there. Remember, please share, share, share.
