Zoom Out

I didn't coin this phrase, but I am a fan, "Where you stare, is where you steer." I can become so fixated on something I miss the bigger picture. Today at work, some electricians entered the building with plans rolled out asking if they could see our electrical panel.

They told me where it was, and I granted them access. Seconds later, they returned with a mission fail. No panel, the plans were wrong. They studied the drawings again declaring it was somewhere else in the building and led me to a room that looked legit. They were the experts, right?

Once inside, they came out, "It's not in here." I looked up at the wall in front of them and asked, "Is that it?" The look on their faces was priceless. A seemingly ignorant person pointed out their panel to them. They both breezed right past it fixating on the plans.

I feel like these guys on a regular basis. If I fixate on something, I ruin it. I miss the bigger picture. I'm trying to learn to zoom out and take a conceptual view of things. It works as long as I keep checking myself! Hope this helps you, too.
